Research Interests

I have studied the paleoecology, paleolimnology, paleoclimatology of the U.S. Midwest, the U.S. northeast, and the Everglades. I use pollen, diatom, charcoal, stable isotope, and sediment chemical analyses of lake and peat sediment cores to illuminate past environmental changes and to compare them with changes since European settlement of this country. Most of the research has been done in collaboration with NSF-supported COHMAP scientists, with support by the National Park Service and the Lac du Flambeau tribe in northern Wisconsin. The research is interdisciplinary and students from IES, AOS, Geology, Botany, Geography, Zoology, Soils, and Landscape Ecology have been involved with these studies.
